What software, or hardware, does everyone use for game design? Here’s a spot to share and discuss engines, art programs, DAWs, and any other tools that help you make games!
December 3, 2024 at 11:09 pm #2637GGUSZParticipantI personally started making my games in Godot!
but obviously making games takes more then just a game engine.
For my Pixel art i use Pixelstudio. Asprite is better in my opinion but there are a few certain things in Pixelstudio that just integrated into my workflow over the like almost 8 years i’ve been making games for.
I can also really recommend Notion for planning out games and create design documents! i recently started using it and it’s really been great!December 11, 2024 at 2:02 am #2731Kallias DornanParticipantThe last game I made, I used RPG Maker VX Ace! My next game will be made in RPG Maker MV, and I’ve got a couple of games that will be made using the Tyrano visual novel engine.
In terms of the art of these games, if I’m not buying already made assets, I’m making them myself in Aseprite, Pixelmator Pro, or Photoshop Elements.
For planning and progress and whatnot, I use a combination of Trello and GoodNotes. Trello I use to keep track of projects and GoodNotes I use for coming up with ideas, outlining plot points, etc.December 11, 2024 at 9:53 pm #2734FireyeParticipantHere’s what I use, pretty much all Free & Open Source (FOSS).
Engine: Godot
Source control: Git (via CLI) & Github
IDE: Neovim
2D Art: Aseprite & GIMP
3D Art: Blender
Recording: Audacity
DAW: ArdourAnd yes, aseprite is free; due to its open source nature, you can simply compile it from source rather than buying it outright. I’ve paid for it to support its development, but the option to use it for free is totally there.
