Anyone else a webdesign oldbie?
Hey everyone! I found this community through youtube and I was inspired to start making personal websites again. I originally was doing this starting in 1997 as a high schooler on Geocities and gURLpages (gURL dot com was a Y2K era girly webzine that was advertised in Delia's catalogs, and they had their own webhost.). I used to have cliques, joined webrings, and tried so hard to make my sites the best they could so I could get in those elite cliques (like woogoo, and I think one other that had a worm pixel?) I wanted to be hosted by a really cool .nu domain. Back then, people would open up their hosting accounts if they had domains to others for hosting. In the end, I bought my first domain in 2002 and had my blogs, personal sites, character shrines and all of that. I ended up being the person that hosted others.
Right now, only my character shrines remain online while I'm working on making a new personal / art website.
I largely stopped working on websites and archived my old ones around 2013 just because there wasn't a community to really support working on them anymore. I'm really glad to see an upsurge in this as a way to get away from the toxicity of social media.
Anyone else from this era?
Anyone want to ask questions about what it was like back then?
1997 wow that's a long time ago.
I lived in the edge of golden era, where i can't even experience it yet and it's already went shit now.
Would love to hear from your perspective, what is it like back then and what website you used to visit and what did you do on the internet at the time?
