Captain Henson:“While Sonic gijinka designs are familiar, the thrill of bringing my unique ideas to life was palpable. When I shared my concept with Tauraffelle, who was equally intrigued, we eagerly dove into this creative collaboration, especially with the highly anticipated Sonic Movie 3 right around the corner. We used the Sonic Channel Profiles for the pose, layout, and descriptions to maintain a connection to the original series, ensuring our profiles were consistent yet distinct. Taureffelle took the lead, once again, on the design process. My only contribution was including the Shadow ‘05 logo on her jacket to visually represent the game. This logo, which is a key element in the game, serves as a visual cue to the character’s origins and adds a layer of authenticity to the design. Taureffelle decided to give gijinka Shadow a leather jacket because of the game’s incarnation of riding a bike, and it simply has a badass look. The fur around the collar represents the chest from the official design. Initially, she wanted leather pants but didn’t like how they looked, so she stuck with regular black jeans. The tanned skin came from the tanned skin of the official design, most apparent in Yuji Uekawa’s art. he character description was a challenging aspect of our project. I was eager to delve into more detail about Shadow’s development throughout the series, but the problem was the length, which was too long for the profile. Shadow is a complex character that has developed throughout many games. I had to make some tough decisions, including cutting out a paragraph that initially went after the second. “For a time, her past was a relentless force, dictating her every move and shaping her future. From the unfulfilled wishes to the burning desire to unravel the enigma of her creation, she was a prisoner of her own history. But she didn’t succumb to it. Now, she’s the master of her own fate, unwavering in pursuing her goals.” As much as I enjoyed referencing Shadow ‘05 in greater detail, I had to shorten the character description, so I took the final sentence and placed it at the end of the first paragraph. The reference is still there, but now much quicker to the point. At least the name-dropping of “Chaos Control” and “Chaos Blast” keeps the overt ‘05 reference I wanted. The official Profile only name drops Chaos Control, so adding another chaos ability expanded Shadow’s capabilities without taking too much space.” 3
As for the design, Tauraffelle took the lead in making almost every decision. All I asked was for the warrior feather from SA1 to be added. This was a deliberate choice to further connect our design to the games, as the feather is a cool addition to Amy’s wardrobe. This inclusion led to removing the headband as Taureffelle saw another head accessory as redundant. I contemplated adding the long hammer but figured keeping the iconic Piko Piko Hammer made more sense. Tauraffelle, with her keen eye for detail, wanted to play into Amy’s acrobatic skills, so she tried to find sports clothes that fit the official design, eventually choosing a tennis outfit for a girly and sporty look. Footwear is the most striking departure from the official design compared to previous characters. While Sonic and Knuckles were each given footguards, per my request, the aesthetic stayed within the shoes of the games. Tauraffelle’s innovative idea was to give Amy stirrups (standard for gymnasts to wear) and legwarmers (fit the character and help keep leg muscles warm), while the toe rings were added to complement the bracelets and as another girly element, adding a unique twist to the character’s design. Once again, the description is similar to the official profile, but now, with the addition of her strong loyalty to friends.” 2
Captain Henson:“While Sonic gijinka designs are familiar, the excitement of bringing my unique ideas to life was palpable. When I shared my concept with Tauraffelle, who was equally intrigued, we eagerly dove into this creative collaboration, especially with the highly anticipated Sonic Movie 3 right around the corner. Our joint efforts, guided by the Sonic Channel Profiles, ensured our profiles were consistent yet distinct, maintaining a strong connection to the original series. As for the design, we gave her darker skin and dreadlocks because those features fit the character and are common for many humanized Knuckles designs. Like Tails, I wanted to incorporate some upgrades from the games, so gijinka Knuckles was given the shovel claws and air necklace from the Adventure games. The sunglasses from SA2 were considered, but we decided to keep her head free for future art. These design choices were made to enhance the character’s visual appeal and maintain a connection to the original series. The top was originally red, but that blended with the hair, so Taureffelle changed the top to white and made the pants red. A crop top was used to show off the six-pack. Gold beads were placed in the hair because Taureffelle liked the way those looked and they complimented the yellow of the foot guards. Speaking of which, the foot guards were added to further accentuate the character’s formidable fighting prowess. The character description is kept fairly close to the official Profile, but I added the Sonic 3 & Knuckles bit because it is a great example of her raw power.” 1

We used the Sonic Channel Profiles for the pose, layout, and descriptions to maintain a connection to the original series, ensuring our profiles were consistent yet distinct. Initially, I had a few ideas for the design, but I entrusted Tauraffelle with the creative reins. She retained the outfit and gave the gender-bent Dr. Eggman hair that mirrored the official design’s mustache, a choice made in a few other gender-bent designs. An element of the official that tends to be dropped in gender-bent designs is Eggman’s overweight body shape to keep in line with the official design and add more body diversity to the Sonic gijinka line-up. Tauraffelle’s unique perspective and creative decisions truly enriched the design process. The character description here is kept close to the official Profile, with very few changes compared to Sonic and Tails. It was definitely the most straightforward character to figure out design-wise, which gave us a sense of confidence and ease in the project’s progress.” 3
Next up is Tails! Captain Henson:“While Sonic gijinka designs are familiar, the thrill of bringing my unique ideas to life was palpable. We used the Sonic Channel Profiles for the pose, layout, and descriptions to maintain a connection to the original series, ensuring our profiles were consistent yet distinct. As for the design, she was given pigtails because of the fit. Initially, Taureffelle gave her long pigtails to represent the two tails, but the obvious problem is that this design element would fit Cream the Rabbit better. I wanted to still give the gijinka designs abilities that lined up with their game counterparts, so I had to think of a way of incorporating flying into this Tails’ design. If that wasn’t enough, Tail’s backstory involved being bullied for his two tails, so I also had to consider that. This led to a meticulous thought process. Eventually, I thought of the perfect solution. Our gijinka Tails would be born with weaker legs, which led to bullying and resulted in her creating artificial Tails to help her fly. It was also my idea to incorporate Tails’ ‘Sonic Adventure’ upgrades, the Jet Anklet and Rhythm Badge, to help add some extra flavor to the design. Plus, the Jet Anklets would help gijinka Tails with speed, so adding it helped flesh out the character. Taureffelle gave Tails goggles and overalls because they fight the mechanic vibe, but she was unaware of Tails’ Boom design. As mentioned above, while writing the character description, I had to consider the game character and his story and how to translate that to a human girl. The process was challenging, but I’m quite happy with the result.” 3
